Halcon Wines

Insanity in Domestic Syrah.

Winemaker and Co-Founder Pax Mahle has a thing for Syrah. And, he has been making a name for himself and for the grape since 2000; with Pax Wines, Wind Gap, etc. Baron Ziegler, Co-Founder and CEO is/was a super fan of Pax, but he is also an innovator in the industry, not to mention a lover of Syrah. Their friendship forged the path to purchasing one of the most revered (and feared) vineyards in California. 2,500 feet above sea level, there is no easy button on Halcon. It is one of the highest sites in the state, sitting above the fog, and benefiting from the coastal winds, but extremely low yielding due to the challenging climate, persistent winds, and demanding soils, which are a unique composition of shale, mica-schist, and quartz. 15 acres of carefully planted vines, predominantly dedicated to Syrah, that is the elusive Halcon Vineyard. And both Pax and Baron would tell you, the challenge it provided was more than they could resist…because in the end (you can taste for yourself!) the results are worth it.
